Ruby's Bridges Program

"Sometimes it is hard for children to see the future and see what their thinking will be. The Ruby's Bridges program exposes them to different voices and engages them to think about tolerance and building relationships."

Ellen Tellez, Teacher, 93rd Street School

"The pen pal letters revealed their differences as well as equalities. For 10 year-olds who have grown up in the safety of the Valley, it was difficult to comprehend how kids a few miles away lived in a less secure world. On the other hand, they all understand Sponge Bob, soccer, and Yu-gi-oh".

Carol Hakobian, Teacher, Serrania Avenue School

"The Ruby's Bridges buddy school interactions, culminated by Ruby's visit, have made a lasting impression on the students, staff, and the parents/guardians/caretakers. Ruby's visit lit our candles, put a shine on our "Little Rubies", and united our school community."

Maria E. Hernandez, Magnet Coordinator, Crescent Heights

"We created a recipe for building relationships based on diversity. The ingredients were a positive attitude, academics, building  character, and love and commitment."

Judy Deutsch, Counselor, 93rd Street School

"It was a great pleasure watching the students interact at the park. They played games together, talked, joked, hugged, and held hands".

Sibyl Sperber,  Teacher, Serrania Avenue School
